There is a stereotype of women being the more emotional gender, more intuitive, more in touch with themselves. Perhaps there is some truth to that, but woman is much more than that.
The title of the group exhibition by Alma Čača, Karin Grenc, and Tea Morić Šitum, called “Intuition,” opened at the University Gallery in Split, speaks much more than the title.
I would even be inclined to call the exhibition by another name.
Those familiar with the work of these three artists will know Alma’s abstract paintings created by splashing with brushes that she often makes herself, Karin’s sacral sculptures inspired by her heartfelt faith, and Tea’s abstract experiments aimed at moving away from the real world but remaining with one foot on the ground nevertheless.
However, each artist has been able to deepen her practice, as this exhibition testifies.
Karin decided to transform religious motifs into the motif of the heart – whether it be one in flames or in numerous other forms to remind us that God is love and that we could love each other a little more.
Alma decided to introduce Rorschach-like landscapes into her otherwise abstract work. Her latest experiments with images on Japanese paper illuminated from behind the seethrough paper stand out, giving her otherwise layered works countless more dimensions.
And Tea, who has been trying for years to paint light by playing with the transparency of colors, has now added a bit of opaque pigment, and the works have shone in an entirely new way.
I would dare say that the alternative title of the exhibition could have been “Light,” whether it be religious, symbolic, or literal.
